MONTAGE DEER VALLEY NAMED UTAH'S FIRST LEED CERTIFIED RESORT HOTEL
Montage Deer Valley, which opened in Park City, Utah in December 2010 has been awarded Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for New Construction V2.2. This third-party rating system has been designed to encourage the design, construction and the operations of more sustainable buildings. Montage Deer Valley, the first certified hotel in the state of Utah, is a newly constructed mixed-use hotel and residential project which has been LEED certified as a single development, denoting it as a high performance building that is a responsible, efficient and healthy place to live and work. "We're gratified to have created a hotel and residential project in Park City that has obtained LEED certification," said Alan J. Fuerstman, Founder and CEO of Montage Hotels & Resorts. "It's a fitting tribute to our developer, The Athens Group, our designers, construction team, Park City and the ongoing efforts of the entire Montage Deer Valley staff that luxury and sustainability can be synonymous." Fewer than 100 hotels worldwide have achieved LEED certification at Certified Silver, Gold or Platinum levels. The specific LEED for New Construction V2.2 rating system designations reflect assessments of factors such as site selection, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. "Montage Deer Valley’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Montage Deer Valley serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish." Montage Deer Valley worked with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in concert with the agency’s Environmentally Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse Initiative. "Montage agreed to incorporate significant sustainable features such as minimizing waste, preserving open space, and using renewable energy in the Empire Canyon project, which is a key reason why EPA included it in the Environmentally Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse (ER3) initiative, said Elliott Gilberg, Director of EPA’s Office of Site Remediation Enforcement. It is exciting to see this project come to fruition." "Montage Deer Valley was able to implement a number of energy efficient measures, sustainable building practices, and operating policies that reinforces our organizations overall commitment to sustainability," said Mark Slymen, Director of Sustainability for Montage Hotels & Resorts and a LEED Accredited Professional who oversaw adoption and implementation of required LEED elements for the hotel. Some of these commitments include: diversion of over 82% of generated construction waste from local landfills, utilization of both regional and recycled materials, implementing both energy and water efficient equipment and fixtures, and green housekeeping, purchasing and landscaping policies.
